Pyrite is a sulphide of Iron with a distinctive brass-yellow colour. Named from Greek word Pyr meaning 'fire', giving off a characteristic spark when it is struck.

It looks similar to gold and this similarity has caused people to believe they are about to become rich. Hence, Pyrite is often called  “Fool’s Gold”. However, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in Pyrite.
